Thank you for asking Johnny Edwards Kerb-laying to comment on your products, we hope the following comments will be useful.
The benefits of using Envirokerb are:
- Speed of installation
- Being able to lay manually, which is financially beneficial to the client.
- Environmentally friendly due to the use of re-cycling materials, rather than 100% virgin aggregates.
The advantages over existing drainage systems:
- Up to 400% more production per day over conventional 2 piece units. (2000 metre .480 Kerb Drain recently laid in 5 nights by J.E.K at A1(M) Scotch Corner for McAlpine Project Services)
- Up to 60% saving on labour per linear metre over conventional 2 piece units
- Manual installations
When road construction is complete clients remark on how good the system looks, along with the deflective nature of the unit when in contact with plant and rollers etc. where other units would break or chip.
Our clients have also passed favourable comments on the new composite Bridge Deck units (which are available in place of the old Cast Iron units) and many say the new Envirodeck units look a lot better and produce a quality job.
The service and feedback from Chris and the team @ P.D.S is commendable and judging by the frequency that we are using P.D.S products on site throughout the UK, they are definitely heading in the right direction. Our overall impression of the product is a positive one, and we look forward to working with P.D.S products in the future and in particular the Mini Envirokerb's for Bridge Decks.
P.D.S should be applauded for their investment in quality tooling, which is obvious when you see the end product.

Nottinghamshire County Council, Maintenance Department – Charles Cresswell
We have now been using the Envirokerb lightweight kerb range for approx 9 months. The hew Health and Safety regulations have meant that we have been investing in new machinery and investigating new products for around 18 months.
The Envirokerb has been used for 3 main installation types. Firstly we have used them for drop crossings where we are renewing or enlarging drive openings, secondly the units have been used for maintenance purposes for straight spot repairs. We have also incorporated them in larger schemes as an authority, where houses, cars and narrow roads have made mechanical installation fairly impossible.
The product has proven to be very strong, and to date we have experienced no breakages. This includes site vehicles and traffic post-installation. Once in-situ the product has the appearance of concrete and blends exactly with existing kerb-lines.
We would have no hesitation in recommending the product.

Braam Colyn, Sub Agent – Cambridgeshire Guarded Bus Route - Edmund Nuttall
We have chosen this product to use on the Cambridgeshire Guided Bus way Scheme because:
- Our no.1 priority is Safety! – manual handling – Envirokerb's are substantially lighter than conventional kerb drainage systems, making them safer and easier to place
- They are made of recycled material, a plus in this day and age (reducing carbon footprint etc)!!
- Traffic loading – yes, still early days, Oakington junction kerbs are performing satisfactorily thus far. The 45 splay kerbs are regularly mounted by construction vehicles at this junction and show no signs of damage
- Service – Very good. We have made frantic last minute calls to get extra units which have arrived as promised on time

Richard Henderson, Section Engineer – Upperton Viaduct - Edmund Nuttall
Why it was chosen? Envirokerb was specified by our client in order to satisfy their requirement for maximising use of recycled products.
What are the benefits in using Envirokerb? As well as being much easier to handle the use of Envirokerb has reduced the amount of underground drainage works required (Drain runs, Man holes, Gully pots etc).
How does it stand up to traffic? The road has been in operation for 6 weeks we have had no significant problems/failures of the units.
What is the overall impression? The Envirokerb system offers many advantages to using concrete kerbs so compensates for the increased material cost incurred.
Quality of the PDS service? The service we have received so far has been very satisfactory. Our orders have arrived at site in the correct quantities on the dates arranged. All inquiries to the sales office have been answered promptly.

Sunderland Southern Radial Route & Darlington ETC (Birse) - Andy Moore, Senior Agent
Envirokerb was considered alongside its main competitors and unit rates were comparable with these. Due to the following benefits it was decided to go with Envirokerb over other manufacturers.
- Recycled product - environmentally friendly
- Lightweight
- Robust
- Little or no waste due to damage
- One piece unit, therefore quicker to lay than a two piece system
The product has stood up very well to site traffic and being knocked about, although this is kept to a minimum to reduce damage, to date we have had no damaged units to replace, as with the previous job.
The product has been used on the last two contracts and has proved itself to be a very good product and one which we would use again, the service from PDS has been first class and deliveries are prompt and accurate. The team at PDS have looked at the design and have been very helpful all the way through the gaining approval and ordering system then on to the actual supply of the product.

M1 Junctions 31 & 32 - Jackson Civil Engineering - Andy Burton, Project Manager
We chose the Envirokerb for three reasons; sustainability, cost and health and safety
Advantages include cost, also they are easy to handle and can be laid by hand
Disadvantage: with the combined units they don't work very well on a radius as the joints 'pull'. (PDS now offer a radius unit cut as requested).
Excellent service as usual, thanks.

Transportation & Engineering Dept – Swansea Park & Ride and Landore Express Route. City & County of Swansea - David Hughes, Assistant Engineer
Following the successful use of the Envirokerb product at the Fforestfach Park and Ride scheme, the Authority has utilised the system on other schemes throughout the City. The City and County of Swansea are currently developing a variety of schemes through Welsh Assembly Transport Grant funding. The projects are designed to provide enhanced facilities towards encouraging sustainable forms of transportation. These include works to construct a new dedicated Metro track through the City Centre, as well as Express bus routes and Park and Ride facilities. The Envirokerb system was specified due to its high impact resistance in comparison to other traditional products, whilst also assisting the client in achieving sustainability targets. The City and County of Swansea is keen to maximise sustainability throughout the construction process and through material specification.
The product has been used by external contractors and the in-house highway construction unit and both have found the product easy to use in association with a highly professional supply service.
The Authority also utilised the free design service offered by Envirokerb, which was invaluable in achieving the tight procurement deadline.

We have now been using the Envirokerb lightweight kerb range for approx 6 months. It was originally trialled for two reasons: firstly the new health and safety regulations concerning the installation of kerbs and secondly pressure on all authorities to use recycled materials.
The contracts carried out so far have been a cul-de-sac, a street in an industrial area and a city council car park, all different by nature. All sites have had access problems making it problematic, if not impossible for mechanical lifting equipment to be implemented. The Envirokerb offers the perfect solution. At 15kg it is lightweight enough for manual installation. There is a comprehensive range of products available including radii, and they are mainly indistinguishable from the traditional concrete product.
Of all the projects we have carried out so far we have not had a single breakage or chipping to kerbs either during installation or after we have left site, and the product has proven to be stronger in all aspects than the traditional concrete kerbs.
Even though the product is more expensive to purchase initially, the speed of installation, the long term durability, the many Health and Safety advantages and the extra benefits gained from the use of recycled products have proven to make Envirokerb a cost effective solution to our problematic kerbing installations.
