EnviroKerb 5x10

Persimmon Homes, South Wales

Persimmon Homes in South Wales requested a meeting with PDS regarding the opportunity to trial the 5x10 range of recycled kerbs. It was agreed that units would be installed on the Three Oaks project in South Wales and then monitored throughout the life of the construction phase.

Standard concrete kerbs have a short life expectancy on a new House site due to the amount of damage caused by delivery wagons and site machinery. In fact Persimmon report that normally the Majority of the concrete kerbs will be replaced at least once, and some of them numerous times prior to the top asphalt layers being laid. A great number of these kerbs have slight 'spalling' and cracks, but are still rejected by the Adopting Authority. Whilst 'spot-repairs' are carried out, there may be tendency for the Sub-Contractor to install heavy concrete kerbs manually increasing potential Health & Safety issues.

On the first site visit by PDS to inspect the Envirokerb 5x10, it was obvious that a number of units installed in highly trafficked areas had being over-run by a heavy delivery vehicle. All the units were still in one piece and no damage had been caused to them. They were not cracked, spalled or marked in any way. The sub-contractor, Cundy were very impressed with the strength and also the speed of lay. It was commented that they hoped the Envirokerb 5x10 range would eventually become the industry standard!
